Two original early 18th century copperplate engravings from Britannia Illustrata, The Principal seats of the Nobility and Gentry of Great … Read more Two original early 18th century copperplate engravings from Britannia Illustrata, The Principal seats of the Nobility and Gentry of Great Britain published first between 1707 and 1712 and again in 1720. The plates depict stunning bird’s eye topographical views of significant English buildings and the estate grounds surrounding them. The views are important records of both architecture and formal garden design of the period, which in many instances have since been altered beyond recognition. The artist responsible is Johannes Kip (1652-1722) a genius Dutch artist, who both drew and engraved this and similar work. Both are signed within the plates, (lower right hand corner). Images include: the original Battsford House, Gloucestershire, which was eventually rebuilt in the late 19th century and became the home of the famous Mitford sisters. The other estate depicted is Southam, begun in the 15th century and also found in the Cotswolds of Gloucestershire. The house survives today, elaborated and modernized as the Ellenborough Park Hotel. Good antique condition with normal folds to the paper and plate marks visible. Very sharp 20th century black and gilt frames with fine reverse glass matting and gilt filage, also in good condition, only very light wear at the sides of the frames.
