Two, elephant head handles are on opposite sides. A reddish-umber, six character, Qianlong, reign mark in Zhuanshu script is carved and glazed to the inset base. The finely carved, traditional, Chinese, hongmu stand is included. Circa Republic of China era, no later than mid century.

cong: 12.125" high x 6.25" wide x 5.125" deep

stand: 2" high x 7.25" diameter

Although it is generally considered to be a ritual object of some sort, the original function and meaning of the cong are unknown. Later writings speak of the cong (the four sides) as symbolizing the earth, while the bi (circular top and bottom) represents the heavens. See less
