Vintage MCM 1960’s Nambu Tekki Style Japanese Cubism Cast Ironware Bookends Attributed to Tadahiro Baba- A Pair. The Nambu Tekki craft has a history dating back to the 17th century in Japan and was made prominent by the Nambu clan in northern Japan about 400 years ago. Made incorporating iron sand, river sand, clay, lacquer and charcoal which were available locally. Attributed to Tadahiro Baba, born in Kyoto in 1930. He continues to work in Nagano and Tokyo, creating anything from iron tableware to sculptures. Baba's designs feature fluid shapes with a distinctive modern edge very much akin to the style of Frederic Weinberg. These bookends are characterized by their abstract, figurative design depicting stylized birds.
