Original 1925 pochoir lithograph by Jean Auscher (French, 1896–1950) titled "La Maison des Dames Seules" (“The House of Only Women”), from the rare folio "La Faune des Dancings." In this introspective scene, Auscher offers a candid portrayal of feminine camaraderie within a cloistered interior, suggestive of a private salon or maison close.
Rendered in lithographic wash and hand-colored pochoir (in this instance discreetly only on the lips of two subjects), the work reveals Auscher’s deft ability to capture the varied personalities of the all-female bar in the risqué Paris of the 20s.. His depiction of Paris’s demimonde echoes the theatrical sensitivity of Christian Bérard and the social psychology of Toulouse-Lautrec to whom Auscher is often compared.
