Item description:
Fabulous, rare tulip vase in soft vitrified porcelain, entirely hand-decorated with a genuine porcelain painting on the main side of the vase depicting a seascape with a fisherman and boats, while the sides, base, and back feature wonderful floral decorations, all painted with a brush tip. The flake decorations on the three openings of the vase where the tulips were inserted are also beautiful, as are the two fluted columns on the sides of the main front of the object, with bas-relief friezes at the top resembling capitals. The object can be dated between 1765 and 1774 and is marked under the base with a double circle and a central cross in gold under enamel, a mark used by the Höchst factory in the second half of the 1700s. The patina on the object is beautiful and perfectly in line with our dating, clearly visible especially under the base and on the various small chips where the ceramic is dirty and oxidized by time.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
In our internet research, we found a pair of tulip vases that are practically identical, differing only in the central decoration, offered by the French auction house Drouot and appraised by an art expert as being manufactured in Höchst, also dated between 1765 and 1774, confirming our attribution (see last photos). We also found several porcelain objects from the 1700s, all made by the Höchst factory, listed at very high prices, ranging from €400-800 for a small white porcelain sculpture to €1,200-1,600 for two small polychrome porcelain statuettes only 12 and 15 centimeters high. Finally, we found several items from the same manufacturer offered on the Internet at very high prices, with maximum bids of over €5,000, to give a general idea of the value of porcelain from this manufacturer.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The Höchst porcelain factory is a porcelain manufacturer based in Höchst, now a district of Frankfurt am Main. Founded in 1746, it is one of the oldest German manufacturers, boasting remarkable auction results and numerous collectors, and is internationally renowned for the quality and beauty of its antique artistic porcelain. In the last photos, we have added brief historical notes on the manufacturer taken from one of our books in French, with many of the marks used, including ours, number 8.
