A striking and rare 19th century convex mirror, traditionally known as a “Witch’s Mirror” or “Oeil de Sorcière”.
These mirrors, with their distinctive bulging glass, offered a panoramic reflection of an entire room and carried a reputation steeped in legend. In European folklore, they were considered protective objects, able to ward off negative energies and the “evil eye.” In the popular imagination, they were also linked to witchcraft, said to be used for spells and enchantments.
Because of these associations, many were destroyed, making surviving examples extremely rare. This piece, preserved in superb condition, is exceptional not only for its state of preservation but also for its large size: 46 cm (18.1’’) including its original gilded frame – a dimension uncommon for its time.
