Mata Ortiz refers to both a village in Chihuahua, Mexico, and the distinctive, highly collectible pottery that originated there. The the finishing techniques vary widely.
Consolaciòn Quezada de Corona was the oldest sister of Juan Quezada. He taught her the basics in the earl 1970s. She usually made large ollas with red and black designs such as this piece. Mata Ortiz Potter was brought to the states in the late 1970s and has been popular ever since. The finest pieces are to be found in museums around the world.
