This is a matted French couture fashion design by the iconic Balenciaga. It originally came from a 1958 mid-century French fashion magazine. Fashion designs by iconic designers have become increasingly rare to find with the passage of time. Such an image is quite RARE, especially in pristine condition with strong color. Balenciaga worked with fluid lines rather than constrained styling which limited movement. He promoted a true sense of comfort in dresswear. This dress design showcases a high waistline, empire style (taille directoire) in a fabulous plum purple color. It is complimented by a wide rim matching hat! The back styling of the dress has a simplicity that makes for elegance and glamour. Note the detailing at the neckline, the hat edging and the white gloves. And...the strong vibrant purple color is so CHIC! The design is illustrated and signed by Pierre Mourgue who was one of the leading fashion illustrators in Paris in the 1920’s through the mid-century years. He widely contributed to the Gazette du Bon Ton, the premier Paris fashion magazine, and was one of a select few who worked for French Vogue Magazine. He imparted a sense of wit and flair in his drawings and he was an affectionate observer of life and fun. Clean, pristine condition. Perfect for today's vintage clothing fashionista.
