In "Winter," offered here, the Catalonian artist has set the scene with the stark branches, both colored and embossed, against widespread snowy white with geometric embossed shapes. The lone flutist and the muted tones of the hillside village, with its tiled roofs and church spire, all effectively convey the season's essence. Across the suite, Avar has consistently used similar symbolic motifs and colors in creating a dream-like atmosphere to bring forth the emotional aspects he seeks.
Alvar studied at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona. And while in Paris, he gained international recognition when his work was exhibited alongside fellow Spaniards Picasso, Miró, and Dalí. He is celebrated for his mastery across various mediums, including oil painting, watercolors, bronze sculpture, and especially his intricate lithographs, which often feature multiple colors achieved through a plate-by-plate print.
