Antonio tibaldi (rome, c. 1635 - post-1675) workshop of
still life with armor, draperies, and sculptures
oil on canvas (53 x 77 cm - framed 65 x 89 cm)
a beautifully scenic painting depicting a still life composed of an opulent display of objects, including various fine embroidered draperies trimmed with gold trimmings and fringes, parts of a dark suit of ceremonial armor with gold borders, sculptures, an altar adorned with winged sphinxes, and precious engraved metal vases.
these images, beyond the aesthetics of their decoration, are imbued with allegorical meaning, so much so that these compositions could be interpreted as refined vanitas paintings: it is, in fact, a sort of allegory that likely invites the viewer to meditate on the futility of vainglory (symbolized here by the weapons or the altar) or earthly riches (the precious objects and fabrics).
the pictorial characteristics reveal its execution by a capable 17th-century italian artist, whose style evokes the teachings of the finest flemish masters of previous generations. The clear post-caravaggesque roman influences, visible in the contrasting light and dense pictorial texture, are also evident: all reasons that allow us to assign the painting to the circle of antonio tibaldi (rome, c. 1635 - post-1675), a talented follower of francesco fieravino, known as il maltese, and therefore a highly regarded painter of still lifes similar to those of his master.
active primarily in rome, the painter was extremely prolific and enjoyed extraordinary success among collectors of the time. His presence and fame are evidenced by the many compositions that have been returned to him in recent times, held in the most important public and private roman collections of the time, such as those of the albani, barberini, chigi, and colonna families.
