Mark Rothko ( 1903 - 1970 ) is an American Modernist painter of Russian Jewish descent. Although Rothko himself refused to adhere to any art movement, he is generally defined as an Abstract Expressionist. His bold use of color fields make the artworks impressively iconic and highly individual. Rothko is considered to be one of the most important and influential American painters of The 20th Century. Art works by Rothko are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Mark Rothko's luminous art is presented here for the first tome in a definitive work. Diane Waldman curator of exhibitions at The Guggenheim Museum has written a major historical critical essay on this pioneer of Abstract color painting, now regarded as one of the leading artists of The Mid Twentieth Century. In addition to reproductions of 198 oils and watercolors, 96 in full color, the book contains a wealth of supporting illustrations, including photographs of the artist and his family and friends, many published for the first time.
