This geometric abstract by David Segel presents an interplay of form and color, rendered in a restrained palette of charcoal gray, black, ochre yellow, and deep red. The composition is built from overlapping angular planes and simplified architectural forms, evoking a sense of spatial tension and balance. A circular motif intersected by sharp lines anchors the work, drawing the eye into the center of the composition. The painting reflects Segel’s interest in modernist abstraction and his ability to create depth and structure through a minimal yet evocative visual language. Housed in a simple light wood frame, the work has an architectural quality characteristic of Segel’s mid-century work.
American painter and sculptor, David Segel studied at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, Lynchburg College in Virginia, the Institute of Design in Chicago, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Segel then moved to Paris to work and teach, and began what would be a prolific career.
His work has been shown in galleries from Paris, France, to Los Angeles, California, including the Whitney Museum in New York City. Segal also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.
He worked with a variety of mediums, including oils, bronze and wood sculptures, as well as dramatic sketches.
Segal's work is represented in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
