Hailing from Liège and Brussels, with a background in the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Leon Collard (1916-2011) painted this abstract woman on handmade paper with ink and acrylic. Utilizing negative space, Leon captures the viewer's eye by adding varying weights to each brushstroke, thereby giving depth to portraits while simultaneously rendering them with soft, organic lines. Less really is more, and Leon exemplifies this with his use of negative space and high contrast. This piece was created between 1980 and 1990, following his move to Chicago in 1951, where he spent three years at the Art Institute of Chicago.
