This striking antique chromolithograph showcases a rich selection of 17th-century French decorative ornaments, reproduced in vivid detail from original Baroque design sources. Plate LXXVI comes from the celebrated 19th-century ornamental compendium L'Ornement Polychrome, and captures the elegance, symmetry, and dynamism of Louis XIV-era interior and architectural decoration. The print presents a well-balanced composition of seven separate decorative motifs, each reflecting the ornate taste of the 17th century. The upper panel features an intricate gold acanthus scroll pattern surrounding a stylized palmette motif and framed by symmetrical volutes, seashells, and floral elements—typical of regal Baroque ceilings and paneling. Beneath, a horizontal band of floral garlands introduces a series of smaller vertical and rectangular panels. The left panel depicts a winged cherub nestled amid golden scrolls and blue foliage, a classical symbol of innocence and beauty. On the right, a female mask with golden hair adorned with flowers and flanked by fruit and birds forms the focal point of a vertical grotesque. Other panels display variations of Renaissance-revived scrollwork, ornamental urns, and arabesques with classical detailing in bright pastel tones. The print was executed using chromolithography, a popular 19th-century technique for producing richly colored images.
This particular plate was lithographed by A. Racinet’s studio and printed by Firmin-Didot in Paris around 1869. Racinet's work was instrumental in cataloguing and reviving interest in historic ornament across Europe. Collectors and designers alike value this piece for its vibrant color palette, historical authenticity, and intricate detailing. It is not only a beautiful artwork but also a resource for studying Baroque aesthetics and ornamental composition.
