The print was created by Frederick Bloemaert (c.1610–1690), a prominent Dutch engraver from Utrecht, possibly after a design by Johannes van Wijckersloot. It was published in or after 1653, the year of Wachtelaar’s death, and serves as a devotional and commemorative image. The portrait is enclosed in an oval cartouche surrounded by rich Baroque ornamentation: smoking incense pots, rosaries, books, angels’ heads, and Latin inscriptions. These symbolic elements evoke Wachtelaar’s piety, scholarly life, and spiritual vigilance. Above, the Latin reads that he died at the age of 72. Below, a Latin poem extols his virtues, referring to him as a “Vigil,” whose life exuded virtue and learning. The motto “Gratia et Vigilia” ("Grace and Watchfulness") encapsulates his religious devotion and intellectual rigor. Wachtelaar is shown with a calm expression, his gaze gentle but direct, wearing a dark robe and wide collar typical of Dutch Reformed ministers of the era. The execution is finely detailed, particularly in the textures of the beard, hair, and fabric, and reflects Bloemaert’s refined technique and sensitivity to character. Frederick Bloemaert, part of the famous Bloemaert artistic family, was known for religious and portrait engravings of high quality. This piece is not only a valuable portrait of a specific individual but also a fine example of Dutch memorial portraiture from the Golden Age. This engraving would appeal to collectors of theological history, Dutch Baroque art, or emblematic religious prints. Condition: Crisp impression on laid paper. Minor age-toning and some spots, mainly in the lower margin. Edges lightly worn but stable. No tears or repairs. Framing tips: A black or dark walnut frame with a warm-toned mount will complement the detailed linework and reinforce the print’s contemplative atmosphere.
