This exquisite chromolithograph, Plate XCVIII from *L'Ornement Polychrome*, showcases a stunning array of Rococo ceiling medallion and panel designs from the 18th century. Originally conceived for grand salons and decorative interiors during the reign of Louis XV, these designs exemplify the refined asymmetry and natural elegance associated with Rococo artistry. At the center is a circular medallion featuring two vibrant birds perched on a flowering branch, surrounded by a border of pink floral garlands and richly gilded framing. Radiating outward are multiple semi-circular panels, each adorned with floral sprays, birds, butterflies, cherubs, and decorative cartouches.
The plates feature harmonious compositions in pastel blues, pinks, greens, and golds, with symmetrical detailing that nonetheless flows with a sense of lightness and movement. Each roundel or panel reflects the 18th-century French fascination with nature, exoticism, and ornament for its own sake. Several include botanical motifs interlaced with rocaille scrolls or set against rich textures resembling porcelain and enamel. At the bottom of the composition, several square tiles display geometric stylized patterns and floral sprays, possibly referencing floor tiling or wall cornices.
The lithograph was executed by Launey and printed by Firmin-Didot et Fils in Paris around 1869. It belongs to Auguste Racinet’s celebrated decorative arts reference work, which compiled historical design sources from antiquity to the 18th century for the benefit of architects, decorators, and artisans of the 19th century. The Rococo designs seen here would have been used for ceiling frescos, plaster ornaments, porcelain painting, and luxury furniture in the salons of Versailles or the hôtels particuliers of Paris.
