These are three individual matching window panels are made of wood. Individual wood pieces are fitted together into a lattice pattern and mounted in a wood frame. Each piece of wood is cut on both ends in special joints to ensure its snug fit in the pattern. Once the pieces are fitted together and mounted in the mitered frame they will stay in place indefinitely until the frame should fall apart. This type of joinery is very stable and stayed together for centuries. Visitors to China can see these window frames in well preserved traditional buildings. One does not even have to travel out of the country because the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem Massachusetts has installed an 18th century Building named Yin Yu Tang, imported from Anhui Province. The house was taken apart, piece by piece, stone by stone and shipped to Salem and painstakingly pt back together.
The panels still retain a mahogany lacquer finish and are in good condition. They make an interesting wall decoration.
