Probably Spanish or Italian, this very large mirror can be hung either horizontally or vertically, being carved in the same … Read more Probably Spanish or Italian, this very large mirror can be hung either horizontally or vertically, being carved in the same way all around the perimeter; making it suitable for a variety of settings, including as a pier mirror or overmantel. Bold and three dimensional scrolling elements meander around the frame, some invoking leaf forms, others more evocative of strapwork and cartouches. The gilding is bright and very attractive on a thick gesso ground. Ca. Mid 20th century. There is some patina and wear, typical sporadic chipping and some spots of retouch, all in all a good surface with attractive signs of age. Mirror plate with some irregularities, light desilvering.
