This 19th-century Japanese Imari ware porcelain piece exemplifies the intricate craftsmanship and vibrant style for which Imari porcelain is renowned. Hand-formed and decorated, it features a traditional palette of deep cobalt blue, iron red, and white, accented with delicate gold highlights. The exterior displays finely painted flowers, birds, and traditional Japanese motifs in harmonious, detailed arrangements. A possible mark can be seen under the glaze on its base.
Originating in the town of Arita in the 17th century, Imari ware was named after the nearby port from which it was shipped to Europe and beyond. Its bold patterns and vivid colors became highly prized by collectors, with the Dutch East India Company playing a key role in its global trade. While early Imari designs often featured blue-and-white landscapes, later works—like this example—adopted richer, multi-colored decoration, often inspired by nature.
This piece reflects both the artistry of Japanese porcelain-making and the international appeal of Imari ware during the height of its popularity, making it a distinctive addition to any antique or Asian decorative arts collection.
