Follower of niccolò codazzi (naples, 1642 - genoa, 1693)
pair of fantastic architectural capricci with classical ruins and figures
oil on canvas
47 x 60 cm, framed 55 x 68 cm.
an evocative perspective of classical architectural ruins dominates the scene in this beautiful pair of capricci, whose stylistic characteristics appear influenced by the models created by viviano (1604–1670) and his son niccolò codazzi (1642–1693), who collaborated in his father's studio in rome before embarking on an independent career.
specifically, they are the work of an artist active between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, closely related to the style of niccolò codazzi during the central period of his roman production, when he collaborated with some bamboccianti, who routinely added small figures to enliven the capricci.
after his youth in naples and his work in his father's workshop, niccolò codazzi, with his works from his roman period, began to develop an independent artistic personality, and this painting represents an excellent example of this process.
in his views and architectural inventions, he favors a clear and luminous palette, punctuated by deep chiaroscuro contrasts and a bold volumetric rendering.
as for the composition, however, he faithfully reproduces the roman ruins; otherwise, if they were imaginary, they must always have been based on a realistic plan, with the light exposing the monumental ruined architecture, the crumbling arches, the corroded walls, set against ancient monuments now overgrown with vegetation.
both the canvases and frames are in good condition, with some signs of aging. The pictorial material is excellently preserved.
