Pair of Arcadian Landscapes with Figures
Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676 – Venice 1730) - Circle of
Oils on canvas (56 x 72 cm - Framed 77 x 93 cm)
This pair of captivating landscapes, executed in an elegant rocaille style and complete with attractive decorative frames, is conceived with the scenographic sensibility of the most classic Venetian landscape tradition of the early 18th century.
These works, of good pictorial quality, show clear references to the pictorial style of Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676 – Venice 1730), one of the most important protagonists of Venetian landscape painting of this period.
The perspective setting, characterized by a succession of hills and rocky slopes, against which mountains can be glimpsed in refined pale blue hues, is further modulated by the harmonious sequence of light and shadow, creating a remarkable effect of depth. Among the innovations introduced by Ricci to landscape painting was his experimentation with light and its potential for atmospheric rendering.
The works under consideration share many details with many others by the master, such as the mountain ranges that dissolve into the background, the trees placed laterally in the foreground, as well as the small figures that animate the scene, in addition to the compositional approach of the view, which expands in depth in a modulated succession of perspective planes.
After a stay in England and Holland, his direct exposure to Northern European painting—particularly the works of Pieter Mulier and Jacob de Heusch—led Ricci to a new experimentation in the rendering of atmospheric luminosity. This new landscape style blended with the style in vogue in Venetian painting, creating a unique interpretation of landscape painting that was destined to enjoy extraordinary success and naturally inspired many painters close to him.
Our two works, created by an artist who certainly saw and studied his compositions, are an excellent example of this, a fascinating blend of Venetian, Roman, and Flemish painting.
