18th-century Flemish painter, Follower of Jan van der Meer, known as Vermeer d'Utrecht (Schoonhoven, c. 1630–1692)
Courtship Scene at the Entrance to an Inn
Oil on canvas, 70 x 62 cm (framed 80 x 72 cm)
This pleasant genre scene, depicting a young innkeeper engaging in a friendly conversation with a gentleman while preparing to serve him wine from a glass she still holds, is inspired by the 1653 painting by the Dutch painter Jan van der Meer, known as Vermeer d'Utrecht, now housed in the Louvre, Paris.
Set outside an inn or post house, the scene illustrates the theme of seduction, with the young waitress being courted by her client, a charming traveler in a shimmering red cloak, who attempts to charm her.
This work harmoniously combines the painter's Dutch origins with the stylistic traits he learned during his education in his homeland, and the Italianate influences he acquired during his trip to Italy around 1655. In Rome, in particular, he met and collaborated with several artists from the Bamboccianti school, most notably Jan Miel.
The work displays an incredible chromatic refinement and a typically Flemish lighting effect, enveloping this moment of everyday life with an aura of rare poetry and intimacy. The result is a sense of being immersed in a suspended atmosphere, as if outside of time.
The canvas allows us to appreciate the artist's meticulous depiction of the subjects and their gestures, a care that indicates a true-to-life vision and study of everyday life, read and interpreted without literary filters but with a distinct, sincere, and passionate naturalism.
