A Very Fine Antique Cherry Chippendale Tall Chest, Bucks County, PA, Circa 1790s
Attributed to the Quakertown area of Bucks County, Pennsylvania circa 1790-1800
Found in Bucks County, PA near New Hope, PA
A wonderfully executed cherry tall chest. 3 over 5 drawer arrangement. Solid cherry drawer fronts and case sides, with poplar secondary woods. The top left and right flanking drawers retain their original Dutch locks. Nicely moulded double cove cornice moulding. Fluted quarter columns, and Ogee bracket feet. Chest retains the original feet, brasses, and a very early historic surface. I feel the finished surface is the original surface, it’s well oxidised, and shows no evidence of being refinished.
This is the way you want to find chest like this. A super clean chest, with very little wear, and excellent proportions. The secondary wood shows very little signs of wear, and is well preserved. This tall chest will certainly not disappoint even the most discerning eye for Pennsylvania Chippendale furniture.
Size: 64” tall, 42 1/2” wide overall, 22 1/2” deep, and the case measures 38 1/2” wide.
Condition: excellent as found condition, minor scuffs and wear marks from use and age. Minor repair to one drawer lip, the lower portion of the left front foot repaired, and a repair on the cornice. Original Feet, and Original Surface. Excellent state of preservation
All repairs were done with the original pieces of wood from the chest. We have all of the key hole escutcheons, one is a mis-match. They were off at the time of acquisition, and recently re attached. Missing 3 locks. No key.
Slight smoke odour on the interior of the drawers, minor water stain marks on the side of the case, and charring on the top of the case.
