Exceptional French tailor’s mannequin dating from the second half of the 19th century, crafted from carved and turned wood. The figure features a stylized, life-sized anatomical structure designed to simulate the human body for tailoring purposes. Likely originating from a Parisian atelier, this piece is a rare example of functional sculpture—initially created for professional use, yet today highly valued as a decorative sculptural object in its own right. The patinated surface and finely handcrafted details reflect outstanding workmanship, with ball-jointed shoulders allowing for mobility. The torso is supported by a central column resting on a three-legged arched base, whose elegant, understated design is characteristic of French taste during the period. Mannequins of this kind were used in major fashion houses and tailoring studios in Paris for garment creation, fittings, and pattern adjustments. A distinctive feature of this particular example is the original torso covering, made from fragments of period newspapers and magazines, applied using a technique similar to decoupage—very popular at the time. Far from being purely decorative, this treatment also served a functional purpose: it reinforced the structure, protected the wood from wear, and gave the mannequin a “living” quality, evocative of the cultural and visual environment in which it was used.
