A finely observed oil on canvas depicting a domestic barnyard scene, this late 19th-century painting captures a mother hen and her brood of chicks illuminated by soft interior light. Executed with warm tonal harmony and acute sensitivity to animal gesture, the work is signed and dated at lower left and bears stylistic hallmarks strongly aligned with the oeuvre of William Baptiste Baird, an American-born painter who worked extensively in France and exhibited at the Paris Salon. Baird was especially admired for his small-scale, atmospheric depictions of poultry, barnyard animals, and rustic interiors rendered with quiet sentiment and technical finesse.
The composition centers on a hen shown in profile, her plumage richly articulated in layered hues of chestnut, sienna, and golden ochre. A luminous highlight along the flank and back tail feathers suggests filtered light entering the dim stable space. Surrounding her feet are eight chicks, captured in varied attitudes—some clustered in a tight group, others more loosely scattered, with one isolated near the foreground adding both asymmetry and visual rhythm. The chicks’ delicate fluff and diminutive form are rendered with painterly restraint yet individual clarity.
The wall behind them—likely a plaster or whitewashed surface—serves as a luminous backdrop, its warm neutrality allowing the animal forms to emerge in subtle contrast. The artist’s attention to light and shadow is particularly evident in the soft shadow cast by the hen’s head and beak, a technique that lends dimension and naturalism to the rustic setting.
Though unable to fully read the signature, the painting’s formal qualities—including its subject, palette, composition, and date—are highly consistent with Baird’s authenticated works from the 1880s–90s, which often featured similarly framed animal subjects, intimate scale, and a blend of realism and sentiment. Housed in a period giltwood frame with worn, warm patina, the painting retains its original 19th-century character.
