On offer is a framed example of the renowned textile art originated by the indigenous Otomi people of Hidalgo, Mexico, particularly from the municipality of Tenango de Doria. A story of resilience, this distinct embroidery style came to the forefront as recently as the 1960s when a severe drought in Tenango de Doria drove the Otomi people to find another way to survive. They decided to commercialize their traditional embroidery skills. For the designs of their new endeavor, they turned to ancient cave paintings found in the region and also to the local flora, fauna, as well as elements of daily life.
At first glance, it looks like applique work, but closer inspection reveals a modified satin stitch filling the forms. Accordingly, creating this artwork is a labor-intensive process, underscoring the dedication and skill of the artisans. For this example, the embroiderers chose red set off against black on a white ground. To the Otomi, red symbolizes passion, strength, and protection. It is said to be linked to fire, blood, and the setting sun, suggesting the flow of life, energy and a connection to the divine. The central, eight-pointed star represents the cardinal directions and even the universe. There’s a mirror-like layout of the star’s surrounding motifs in this balanced composition, with the flora and fauna flowing dynamically across the fabric, all creating a visually captivating narrative of Otomi life and worldview.
