Among certain Cameroonian … Read more This exquisite skirt or apron is meticulously hand-beaded with vibrant colors, measuring 18" wide by 8.5" high. Among certain Cameroonian communities, women traditionally wore pubic aprons, known as 'caches sexes'—meaning 'to hide the sex'—until around 1961, when laws mandated full clothing. Despite this, the custom endures through elaborately beaded versions still worn today. In the Mandara mountains region, Matakam women crafted these aprons from small iron strips secured by fiber belts, reflecting a rich cultural heritage. See less
