Finely … Read more Chinese porcelain Wanshou bangchuiping, a finely formed rouleau shape vase with a white glazed exterior, interior and inset base. Finely painted, hand calligraphy of archaic and eccentric variations of Zhuanshu script, Shou characters in an inky underglaze blue. The longevity character "Shou" is repeated 316 times: a band of 27 characters on the lip, two bands of 30 characters on the neck, one band of 29 characters on the neck flange, and 10 rows of 23 characters on the body. A blue,six character Yongzheng reign mark in Zhuanshu script is glazed to the inset base. Circa Republic of China era, no later than mid century.


Wanshou wujiang, literally 'countless years of long life without limit' comes from the Shijing (Book of Odes or Classic of Poetry), comprising poems and songs dating from the 11th to the 7th century BC, and traditionally believed to have been one of the 'Five Classics' compiled by Confucius (551-479 BC).
