Striking and rare pair of original Azoulay etchings in red and ivory, titled, signed, and sealed on recto and custom-framed in burled wood with glossy black trim and red velvet liner. The overall impression of these pieces is awesome, with close scrutiny showing remarkable use of line and color.
Guillaume Azoulay is self-taught artist born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1949 and moved to Paris when he was ten. By the time he was thirteen, he was sketching and selling his drawings on the streets, determined to pursue a career in art. His work is predominantly abstract figurative, scaffolded with sharp line work and sepia tones. Often referred to as "King of the line", he has been known to create a single work of art without lifting his pen from the paper.
Add sophistication and motion to your space with Roman Numeral I, a stunning limited-edition etching by internationally acclaimed artist Guillaume Azoulay. This piece is #38 of just 75 made, featuring Azoulay’s signature use of fluid linework and abstract form to depict a powerful, expressive scene.
Known for his unique abstract-figurative etchings, Azoulay (b. 1949, Casablanca) rose to fame as a self-taught artist whose work has been exhibited across Europe and the U.S. His art was acquired by the Louvre in 1978, and he is praised for his ability to suggest movement, emotion, and structure with minimal but masterful line.
Azoulay’s work sits at the intersection of Modern Figurative Art and 20th-Century Abstract Expressionism, yet it remains deeply personal and globally resonant. His limited-edition etchings are prized by collectors for their timeless elegance and emotional depth.
In 1978 two of his pieces were accepted into the permanent collection of the Louvre Museum in Paris. At the time the chief curator said, "He is an artist whose varied works let us predict a very bright future." He is the youngest artist to have his work featured in the archives of the Louvre.
Azoulay has counts many heavyweight international figures outside the art world among his collectors, from President Ronald Reagan, President Sadat of Egypt and President Francois Mitterrand to Prince Rainier and Prince Karim Aga Khan. His works can also be found in the Nelson Rockefeller Collection.

Etching is a complex process, with each piece considered an original. Copperplate was prepared with an acid-resistant ground, lined drawn through the ground, expose the metal. The plate is then immersed in acid and the exposed metal is ‘bitten’, producing incised lines. Stronger acid and longer exposure produce more deeply bitten lines. The acid is removed and ink applied to the sunken lines, but wiped from the surface. The plate is then placed against paper and passed through a printing press with great pressure to transfer the ink from the recessed lines. Like engraving, etching is an intaglio technique.

Frames are over 50 years old and in great vintage condition showing slight damage, wear, loss, and scratches commensurate with age and use. Structurally as sound as when they were new: heavy. Left frame has a very small superficial, contained chip in glass bottom right of signature, slight 1 inch plus scratch at top of frame on right, two areas of scratching on the right frame stretcher, and some ripping on reverse paper wrapping. Velvet on both shows some wear and loss. All adding to patina and character and all as pictured. Please zoom in. Sourced from Reeves Art Gallery who acquired them from the estate of the original collector in Houston, Texas. Stickered en verso by source gallery and custom framer. Measurements are per piece, approximate, and include the full frame (but not the hanging hardware). Ready to hang. less
