We love the graceful style and sophistication of these chairs. Also how well made and sturdy they are. A grand seating indeed.
The horseshoe-back armchair is one of the most iconic forms of Chinese furniture. The graceful curve of the crestrail and the gradual downward slope of the arms give the horseshoe-back armchair its refined appearance. The seamless curve is achieved by a sophisticated joint called the ‘overlapping pressure pin scarf joint’. Its rounded arms gently cradle a sitter, while also providing support for the elbows and arms.

The back features a central splat (vertical panel) with a carved openwork motif resembling a stylized ruyi (a scepter-shaped symbol representing good fortune, longevity, clouds), flanked by slender spindles or supports. The seat is a flat, rectangular hardwood panel, supported by gracefully curved legs that include humpback stretchers (curved crossbars) for stability, and subtle carved details on the aprons and legs, such as lotus and leaf motifs, adding to their decorative appeal.
These blackwood chairs exhibit a dark, polished finish with visible hardwood grain, showing signs of age and use, such as minor wear on the arms and legs, which enhances their antique character.
As an artist from the region, we were extremely selective in the items we chose to collect - only the most distinctive pieces with an authentic and timeless design sensibility.
These were bought in Hong Kong at a reputable Antiques dealer while living there in the ‘90’s, shipped to the U.S. by top international movers in 2003 and kept in temperature controlled storage ever since.
