This colorful figurine depicts the magical little humpbacked horse, which was a popular character from a Russian fairytale penned by … Read more This colorful figurine depicts the magical little humpbacked horse, which was a popular character from a Russian fairytale penned by Pyotr Yershov in the 1830s. Ivanushka the Fool (Ivanushka-Durachok), the other main character in the story, accompanies the horse. This piece was sculpted by Sergei Mikhailovich Orlov (see embossed name on base in pictures) in the USSR and is part of the Gardner Fairytale Series. The base color of the figurine is a beautiful white porcelain that has gold detailing and flowers at the base. The little humpbacked horse is primarily brown with a white and gold patterned mane and tail. Ivanushka wears a lovely orange spotted tunic, blue and white striped pants, and a brown, green and orange hat.

We can see this figurine in pictures of our grandparents’ home in 1955; however, it is likely they acquired the piece earlier than that. This figurine is in excellent condition for a vintage item with little wear noted.
