The vases are decorated with finely drawn, highly detailed, landscapes of hermitages in river setting, amid groves of trees, shrubs, grasses and rocky shores, all in a gold glaze. A gold, Guangxu period, Chu Xiu Gong Zhi place mark is glazed to the inset bases. Circa late 19th century, no later than early 20th. Excellent vintage condition.

Chu Xiu Gong Zhi: Made for the Palace of Gathering Elegance. The Chuxiu palace was one of the Empress Cixi's most favoured palaces and her chief residence between 1856 and 1885. This imperial palace served as the venue for the Wanshou Festival’ or ‘Longevity Festival’, which took place on the occasion of the ruling Emperor or Empress’ birthday, which included activities such as fireworks, poetry reading, a maze competition and moon-viewing. A special order for more than 250 ceramic pieces was placed by the Empress Cixi in 1884, on the occasion of her landmark birthday. All the ceramics created as part of the special order were given the Chu Xiu Gong Zhi mark. See less
