Item description:
majolica ceramic plate, entirely modeled and decorated by hand, with a fish in the center, in futurist style, surrounded by flame-treated red glazes to give the effect of glaze dripping, an extremely complex technique that also changed the outer glazes to brown. Signed on the back "r. Gatti faenza" and on the decoration with a "g." so, we are talking about a plate made by the famous riccardo gatti himself, and not by one of his students. It can be dated between 1920 and 1930.
useful information for evaluating the item:
a brief internet search shows that the highest auction results obtained for riccardo gatti's ceramics reach €7,000-9,000, to give a general idea of the value of the works created by this famous artist from faenza. With more in-depth research, we found a ceramic cake stand, very similar in style and type of flame-finished glaze, sold at auction on may 26, 2021, by capitolium in brescia for €1,600 (€2,016 including fees). Lot number 11, entitled "alzata (1938/40)". Bear in mind that the cake stand, although slightly larger than our plate, is extremely simple in its decoration compared to our object with a fish in the center.

final thoughts on the item:
this plate, made in full futurist style, is particularly valuable, as it is the style in which gatti expressed his highest level of artistry. Note the beauty of the flame-heated enamels that seem to melt and flow towards the center of the plate, a very difficult technique to achieve, which gives a truly exquisite chromatic effect. Note the beauty of the stylized fish in the center, created with broken lines and strong color contrasts, in true futurist style. The wavy rim of the plate was also modeled entirely by hand by the artist. This is an important object that fetches high prices at auction, a real gem for art lovers and collectors.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
born in 1886, riccardo gatti began his career as a ceramist alongside ercole drei, giovanni guerrini, francesco nonni, sculptor giuseppe ugonia, and other young talents in domenico baccarini's circle. He attended the school of arts and crafts as a pupil of virginio minardi at "minardi ceramiche," began working producing art deco-style pieces, then devoted himself to futurism, producing true works of art in ceramics that are appreciated all over the world. In 1928, he opened his own factory called bottega gatti & c. And is considered one of the most important faenza ceramists of the 20th century. He boasts many auction results and participation in numerous exhibitions, events, and artistic competitions, often winning first prize or the gold medal. In the last photo, we have included biographical information about the artist for those who wish to learn more.
