The armchair, designed by Bauhaus member and director of the State College of Architecture in Weimar, Erich Dieckmann, was part of a private collection belonging to an architect in West Germany. Erich Dieckmann was one of the most influential figures in German furniture design. One of his guiding principles was: "The character of a chair is most clearly evident when viewed from the side [\.]. The front view cannot provide any information. So the following statement applies: The character of the chair is determined by its profile." This principle is abundantly clear in the example of our armchair, where the soft, dynamically rising front of the base serves as a resting place for the ergonomically shaped seat shell. Dieckmann was particularly fond of rattan as a material and used it in many of his chair and armchair designs. Erich Dieckmann furniture is rarely available today, with tubular steel furniture regularly receiving the highest ratings.
We are offering this unusual tubular steel armchair from the estate of an architect and collector of Erich Dieckmann furniture. It is probably a prototype or a small series. The armchair has been deliberately left unrestored and shows its authentic vintage condition with intact age patina. Comparable armchairs can be found in the standard work "Möbelbau" (Furniture Making) about Erich Dieckmann, published by Julius Hofmann Verlag. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
