Offered is a framed original serigraph screen print of Haitian artist Salnave Philippe-Auguste's "La Femme Diable", the Female Devil - the original was painted in oil on masonite board in 1974. It depicts a female version of a devil in a tree in a jungle. Known for his lush jungle scenes in vibrant saturated colors, he also painted surreal voodoo figures, still life, carnival scenes, fantastical creatures, women posed against backgrounds of stylized flora and fauna and exotic Haitian street life. He is often referred to as the « Douanier » (Big Boss or Grand Master) of Haitian art, after the renowned French naïve painter Henri Rousseau. Art Naif and Naive Art both refer to artists who are self taught and lacked professional training.
Measures 27" x 33" x 1.25" framed, 25.25" x 31.25" exposed art and matting
This piece is signed on the lower right.
We've recently had this reframed in a vintage Taverneau wood frame, and some of the images are of the uncovered serigraph to show the crisp colors and details. The protective glass is difficult to photograph. This print was sold to our mother by Israeli artist Yankel Ginzburg - a neighbor, who helped organize an exhibit of Caribbean and Haitian artists in Washington, DC in the 1980s. The print was kept wrapped in protective cellophane since production.
From the Haitian Art Society:
Philippe-Auguste, Salnave (Haitian, 1908-1989) was a lawyer and magistrate who wrote books on law and poetry. He began painting at the age of 52 in order to help pay for the education of his seven children. He joined the Centre d’Art in 1960 and became famous with his jungle scenes. Among the best known of Haitian artists of the second generation. He executes in a distinctive painting style of simplified composition, stylized organic shapes, and fanciful patterns rendered in flat vivid color. The viewer is treated to a naive yet sophisticated fantasy delight reminiscent of Henri Rousseau but with a Haitian gaze. Philippe-Auguste's work was included in the traveling exhibition, "Haitian Art," organized by the Brooklyn Museum in 1978, which traveled to the Milwaukee Art Center (now the Milwaukee Art Museum), and the New Orleans Museum of Art. It was also included posthumously in 2020 in New York in “Saving Grace: A Celebration of Haitian Art” and covered in the New York Times.[2] Philippe-Auguste was also the subject of a 2002 Danish documentary Drømmere (Dreamers). His painting Flamingoes was used to advertise it at the Brooklyn Museum. Technique Philippe-Auguste made preparatory drawings on tracing paper which he transferred to Masonite for his paintings. He also combined and re-used the drawings. Collections Philippe-Auguste's work is in the Ben and Beatrice Goldstein Foundation, the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, and the Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia among others. A copy of his Flamingos poster for the 1978 Haitian art exhibit is in the collections of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Personal life Philippe-Auguste was married and had seven children. He died in Port-au-Prince on June 2, 1989.
