An antique American centre - center table from the estate of the late Robert L. Thornton (1884-1964). Crafted in the early 20th century from rich walnut, having a shaped octagonal top with molded edge, over scalloped apron decorated with gardooning running ornamentation, paneled, incised and four sides embellished with applied figural gothic grotesque mask with wings carving, rising on eight turned, reeded and tapered legs, joined by finial topped X form cross-stretcher, terminating on ball feet.
Interesting and unusual, beautiful patina with antique character marks and historic depth. A sturdy yet elegant piece, interesting and unusual, it would be a beautiful addition to any home. The distinctive walnut grain and warmth is evident on the table top surface and compliments the movement created by the double reeded legs and stretcher.
Provenance:
From the R.L. Thornton Chateau Des Grotteaux, Dallas, Texas.
Robert L. Thornton, (known as “Mr. Dallas” among journalists) was a prominent Dallas businessman, philanthropist, mayor, and the man for whom R.L. Thornton Freeway is named, among other various roads and places in Dallas including: Interstate 30 east of downtown (E R. L. Thornton Freeway), Interstate 35E south of downtown (S R. L. Thornton Freeway), and the headquarters building of the Dallas County Community College District in downtown Dallas. He lived out his sunset years from 1928 to 1964 in a stunning French inspired estate on Gaston Avenue, surrounded by an 8-foot stone and hedge wall and elegant wrought iron gate that separates it from the street.
Thornton's Chateau Des Grotteaux (“House of the Cave”) is the most unique and a much beloved estate in Dallas. On nearly one acre in Lakewood, Thornton purchased the unfinished home in 1929 and completed construction. The home was designed after a chateau in Normandy, France, with nearly every architectural and decorative element, along with interior furnishings brought over from France and Italy.
