A charming and beautifully textured mid-century landscape painting that captures a tranquil rural scene rendered in a distinctly modernist style, and executed in oil onto board.

At the heart of the composition lies a small red barn, nestled among tall trees that punctuate the gentle, undulating terrain. A ribbon of pale grey road leads the viewer’s eye diagonally through the canvas, bisecting fields of green and ochre that suggest cultivated land in late summer.

The artist has used broad, expressive brushstrokes and a subtly geometric structure to the forms – typical of the mid-century approach to simplifying nature into bold planes and rhythmic patterns. The colour palette is rich but muted, with earthy greens, clay reds, greys, and soft sky blues evoking a nostalgic calm. Layers of thick impasto and visible directional strokes bring energy and movement to the otherwise serene countryside, giving the painting a textured, almost sculptural surface.

This oil on board is housed in a unique gilt frame with a red inner border which complements the painting very well. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has minor scuffs.
