18th-Century Roman Landscape Artist - Entourage of Paolo Anesi (Rome 1697 - 1773)
River landscape of the Lazio countryside, with the Tiber flowing between some villages and a ruined arch
Second half of the 18th century
Oil on canvas, 37 x 54 cm, framed 55 x 62 cm
The painting clearly displays characteristics linked to the 18th-century Roman landscape tradition and, in particular, to the works of Paolo Anesi (Rome 1697 - 1773), one of the artists most appreciated by travelers on the Grand Tour, especially the English, as well as being in high demand to enrich the already important Roman collections.
His stylistic imprint brilliantly combines the optical clarity of Van Wittel and Lint with the tradition of the ideal landscape made famous by Van Bloemen. In Anesi, however, one perceives a "Romantic" sensibility, reinforced by a distinctive attention to light, closely related to the examples of Venetian landscape painting popularized by Marco Ricci and Francesco Zuccarelli.
The ruins of a Roman arch, evoking the idea of the landscape surrounding the city of Rome, and the course of the Tiber, which punctuates the balanced overlapping of perspective planes, traceable by the eye along the river itself, help to identify the territory we find ourselves in.
The effect is pleasingly scenic, not only due to the accuracy with which the landscape is depicted, but also to the skillful harmony of the chromatic and light counterpoints.
The scenography, while respectful of reality, betrays a fantasy through atmospheric effects that transfigure the view, reproducing the atmospheric sensitivity of air imbued with light, evoking a delicate, Arcadian emotion.
The painting is in excellent condition, perfectly restored, and presented in a beautiful gold-leaf frame.
