A remarkable pair of late 18th century Italian architectural elements, likely salvaged from a chapel or palazzo interior. Each piece is hand-carved from wood, showcasing deeply modeled foliate scrolls and shield motifs framed within recessed panels. The craftsmanship reflects the exuberance of the Baroque transitioning into the more restrained Neoclassical taste, with richly carved ornamentation softened by centuries of age.
Traces of their original polychrome and gilding remain, worn beautifully to reveal layers of history beneath the surface. The timeworn patina, with its muted ochres, siennas, and pale gilded highlights, evokes the romantic decay of grand Italian interiors.
Originally, these elements may have served as decorative bases for altars, wall niches, or architectural framing within a villa or ecclesiastical setting. Their monumental presence and raw authenticity make them ideal for reuse as console bases, pedestals, or striking decorative objects in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
