Shoemaker for Señal S.A., Mexico, circa 1960s, combining functional design with the expressive sculptural qualities that have made Shoemaker's work increasingly sought after by collectors of Mexican Modernism.

Each bookend is carved from a substantial section of richly figured cocobolo, a dense tropical hardwood prized for its extraordinary coloration and dramatic grain. Golden amber, warm caramel and deep chocolate-brown tones flow organically across the surfaces, creating concentric patterns that are completely individual to each piece.

Rather than disguising the natural characteristics of the timber, the design celebrates them.

The bookends have been shaped into elegant, asymmetrical vertical forms with gently curving sides and subtly pointed upper profiles. Their restrained silhouette allows the exceptional grain of the cocobolo to become the primary decoration. Viewed together, the pair has the presence of two small abstract sculptures.

This relationship between natural material and highly controlled sculptural form is fundamental to the work of Don Shoemaker.

Born in Nebraska, Shoemaker eventually established his design practice in Mexico, where he founded Señal S.A. and developed a distinctive body of furniture and decorative objects utilizing native tropical hardwoods. His designs combined the principles of international Mid-Century Modernism with Mexican materials and artisanal woodworking traditions, resulting in objects that are immediately recognizable yet difficult to categorize within conventional European or American Modernism.

These bookends exemplify that approach beautifully. Their smooth hand-finished surfaces contrast with the complex natural figuring of the wood, while their substantial proportions give them sufficient visual and physical weight to function as practical book supports.

The pair retains an original Señal S.A. manufacturer's label reading “Made in Mexico Señal S.A.”, an important detail supporting the workshop attribution.

Shoemaker's work has undergone significant critical reassessment as scholarship and collecting interest in Mexican Modernist and Latin American design have expanded. His furniture and objects are now particularly appreciated for their combination of sculptural experimentation, sophisticated craftsmanship and exceptional indigenous hardwoods.

At approximately 8 inches high, these bookends are substantial enough for an important collection of art, architecture or design books while remaining compact enough for a library shelf, console or desk. The bookends have been cleaned and polished and are presented in good restored vintage condition. Natural fissures, grain variations and other characteristics visible within the cocobolo contribute to the individuality of the wood and should not be mistaken for uniform machine-made surfaces.
