Early 20th century aquatint etching on paper View of St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle by Vojtech Preissig (1873 - … Read more Early 20th century aquatint etching on paper View of St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle by Vojtech Preissig (1873 - 1944) Czech Republic, United States. Signed in pencil and with an inscription "c.81". lower right margin. Subtle shades of taupe, and ochre around tree foliage. Preissig studied at the Prague School of Arts and Crafts and later worked with Mucha and Kupka in Paris. In 1910 he moved to the United States where he taught at Columbia with Arthur Wesley Dow. After moving back to Prague, he supported the Czech resistance and was arrested in 1940 by the Germans. He died in Dachau in 1944. Unframed, displayed under cream mat with backing, opening size 8.5" x 13.5", print sheet size 9.25" x 15.25", has a tipped in mylar cover sheet for protection over etching and under mat. Very good condition. See less
