William Meyerowitz (1893-1981) "Williams and Theresa with Book" etching on paper. Meyerowitz depicted himself reclined with wife and fellow artist Theresa Bernstein (1890-2002). Bernstein lived to age 111 and promoted Meyerowitz for 30 years after his death.
Signed in the plate faintly on the left hand side.
From his New York Times obituary:
Mr. Meyerowitz studied at the National Academy of Design from 1912 to 1916. He was represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum and other museums here and in Paris and Tel Aviv.
In New York, he drew the colorful life of the Lower East Side, in Gloucester, the lines of the harbor and the gardens. His etchings included a series of portraits of Albert Einstein and Supreme Court Justices from Oliver Wendell Holmes to William O. Douglas.
