Unusually … Read more This Truly is an Outstanding Authentic Antique American Primitive Stoneware Butter Crock. Circa Early 19th Century - Approx 1830s. Unusually LARGE SIZE - It is Embossed with a Number 2 Confirming its Two Gallon Storage Capacity. Because of it Large Size it is Very Possible that it was Used on a Country Store Counter to Sell Butter. NOTE That It Also Comes with its Original Matching Lid - This Being Quite Rare in Itself. It has No Maker Mark but in My Considered Opinion It was Most Likely Made in the Southeastern Pennsylvania - Northern Maryland Region ( This also Being Where I Purchased it ). It is Rendered in a Wide and Low Profile Form Sometimes Referred to as "Cake Crock". It also has the 2 Carry Handles - "Ears". Butter Crocks are Much Harder to Find These Days than the Jugs & Jars. It has a Classic American Salt Glaze Exterior with a Interesting Rusty Color Overtones. It Has Early Style Hand Decorated Various Shades of Blue Features on 2 - Both Displays Sides. The Handles are Also Embellished in Blue. The Top of the Lid is Done in a Dark Ox Blood Red - Brown Color. The Interior Glaze is Done in a Dark Coffee Color. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms, Businesses and Household's as They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use.

It is in Excellent All Original Condition and it Displays Beautifully. No Chips - No Cracks - No Repairs. The Interior Has Some Age and Use Related Chalky Surface Calcium Stains - Rings. There is Some Color & Texture Variations to the Exterior Salt Glaze, a Light Spot Glaze Imperfection at the Base - Lower Perimeter and a Few Glaze Imperfections in the Ox Blood Glaze Top Inner Perimeter but These Would Have All Occurred in the Making - Kiln Firing Process. Stoneware Pieces Were Fired in Very Large Kilns with Many Other Pieces at the Same Time and These Types of Kiln Flaws and Others are Quite Common. It is in Strong - Sound and Perfectly Usable if so Desired.
