With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in presenting this exceptional antique oak library table. Gustav Stickley is identified as the maker of this writing desk with a red decal impressed into the center of a drawer panel. The entire piece is marked by the quality of the pioneering furniture master with remarkable craftsmanship evident in every detail. The Arts & Crafts movement was founded on the principles of celebrating the talents of artisans working with natural elements to achieve something beautiful. The essential spirit of that sentiment is apparent within the construction of this library table.
This antique library table is hand constructed from an excellent selection of quartered white oak lumber. The lower stretcher board is fixed into place with a remarkable through tenon which is received by hand-cut mortises on both ends. The through tenon construction is also visible on every leg where they are fitted to the lower side rails of the base shelf support. This style of construction did away with nails and fasteners as to highlight the full talents of the craftsmen's labors. Two dovetailed drawers fitted with hand forged brass pulls are present beneath the top of the library table. Pegged joinery construction is apparent at several intersecting joints and these pegs serve to lock the components together. As a result of the tightly pegged joinery, the entire library table has remained sturdy and in excellent condition. This commitment to fine details contributes to the superiority of craftsmanship and design which made Gustav Stickley synonymous with the best Arts & Crafts furniture ever produced.
This Arts & Crafts mission oak library table measures 42 1/4" long" x 28 3/4" wide x 30" tall.
