Designed between 1927 and 1930 by Josef Hoffmann for Thonet, the Chair No. 811 — also known as the “Prague Chair” — stands among the most enduring works of Viennese modernism. A synthesis of Hoffmann’s rational geometry and the artisanal bentwood tradition, it remains one of Thonet’s most iconic and best-selling designs.
This rare early second-series version from the 1930s features distinct “block legs” with angular iron reinforcements — a characteristic absent from later editions, which transitioned to round legs. Meticulously crafted from bent and stained beechwood, the chair has been fully restored, including a newly hand-woven rattan seat, while the original patina on the wooden parts was intentionally preserved to reflect its age and authenticity, in keeping with the original specifications that are no longer produced today.
It bears the stamped Thonet factory mark and retains the original paper label, making it both a functional seat and a collector’s piece with archival value. In very good condition, it offers a compelling link between early modernist ideals and the continued legacy of Central European design.
An elegant addition to a reading corner, writing desk, or design-focused dining room. Highly collectible and historically significant. This piece has an attribution mark,
