Giovanni Giacomo Van Lint (Rome 1723 - 1790)
View of the Roman Forum
Oil on canvas (53.5 x 68 cm - framed 60 x 75 cm)
Expertise by Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri (Rome, 2010)
This delightful "View of the Roman Forum" (oil on canvas, 53.5 x 68 cm), of imaginative inventiveness, freely inspired by the ruins of the Palatine, with the insertion of an open space with rural houses on the right, is an interesting example of Roman veduta painting of the mid-18th century.
The work can be attributed to Giovanni Giacomo Van Lint (Rome 1723–1790) based, in addition to the aforementioned display style, on an analysis of the figurative style used to execute the "macchiette" (sketches) that animate this scene: from the couple strolling on the left, to the children playing on a makeshift swing next to two farm carts, to the woman with a basket on her head, and the tiny figures moving in the background.
The son of Hendrik Frans van Lint (1684–1763), Giacomo achieved a solid reputation as a view painter, depicting the city of Rome with topographical precision, following his father's example. However, he also expressed his own stylistic personality, devoting himself primarily to "vedutas," both realistic and imaginative, as in the present painting.
The painter's art is characterized by a luminous chromatic tone, with the fading sunlight instilling a delicate sense of chromatic stillness.
These aspects were greatly appreciated by foreign travelers on the Grand Tour, allowing us to classify his work as a true genre, certainly landscape painting, but intended for those seeking a "memory"—what today we would call a souvenir—of the Eternal City.
The painter worked primarily for audiences beyond the Alps, and his works were held in private European collections, particularly those in England.
