Rudolph Carl Gorman was dubbed the Picasso of Native American Artists by the New York Times and is probably the best known Southwestern artist of the latter 20th C.
Gorman was raised in a hogan on the Navajo Nation and began drawing at an early age. After he left high school, he served in the United States Navy before entering college, where he majored in literature and minored in art at Northern Arizona University. In 1958 he won a tribal council scholarship to study outside the United States and went to Mexico City College. He later studied art at San Francisco State University. He became a professional artist in 1963 when he had his first gallery show.
He was the only living artist included the Metropolitan Museum's "Masterworks from the Museum of the American Indian" exhibition, 1973.
