A 19th century Japanese tree bark vase of ovoid form with flared neck, the ceramic body covered in finely crackled glaze and decorated in earthy-toned enamel with a naturalistic tree bark motif, accented with fine wire cloisonné work. A rare example of totai shippo—cloisonné enamel applied over ceramic rather than metal—executed entirely by hand. The technique involves meticulous application of enamel into wire cells, followed by multiple firings to build color and depth. The result is a richly textured surface that reflects the artistry and innovation of Meiji-era craftsmanship.
