Mid-century modern bentwood armchairs by ton, czechoslovakia, 1950s – 4 available these elegant mid-century armchairs were crafted by ton in czechoslovakia during the 1950s, showcasing the company’s legacy in bentwood manufacturing. With a rich history rooted in the innovations of michael thonet, ton continues to represent one of europe’s most respected names in furniture design. The factory in bystřice pod hostýnem—founded by thonet in 1861—remains active today, producing both contemporary and heritage designs using traditional steam-bending techniques. Each chair features a sculptural bentwood frame in dark-stained beechwood with softly curved arms, rounded backrest, and cross stretchers that add strength and subtle detail. The chairs retain their original woven fabric upholstery in a neutral tone, which shows signs of wear consistent with age. While structurally sound, reupholstery is recommended to restore the seat and backrest to their full aesthetic and functional potential. The frames display a warm patina and visible surface wear, adding authentic vintage character without compromising integrity. Their graceful lines and compact proportions make them ideal as dining chairs, desk chairs, or accent seating in residential or hospitality settings. Ton was officially established in 1953 after the nationalization of the thonet-mundus company, a merger formed in 1922. The name ton stands for továrna ohýbaného nábytku, meaning “bent furniture factory.” these chairs exemplify the enduring legacy of thonet’s vision and central europe’s design heritage.
