A vintage pair of carved mahogany bookends depicting the Lions of Lucerne. Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen designed the public structure known as the Lion Monument, which is also referred to as the Dying Lion or simply the Lion of Lucerne, in remembrance of the massacre that occurred during the French Revolution and to honor the brave men who lost their lives in the ambush. They believed that the monument represented loyalty to France rather than the Swiss values of freedom and autonomy. ... The lion, dying from a spear wound in its side, lies beneath a Latin inscription that translates to “To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss.”.
Measures 7 ½” long, 3” deep and 5” high. Good vintage condition; see photos.
